Women could and did play a part in this process of settlement. Iceland, for instance, was uninhabited, and a permanent population could only be established if women also made the journey there.

People borrowed more and more money so that they could buy these shares. Because of this, the American people started to believe that share prices could only go up further.

Astronomy is a science that deals with all the celestial bodies in the universe. Astronomy includes the study of planets and their satellites, comets and meteors, stars and interstellar matter, star systems and clusters.

Previously it was believed that due to the Archaeopteryx’s (始祖鸟) underdeveloped anatomy, it would not have been able to fly. However, research by the London Natural History Museum into its brain developed and that it had good vision and a good sense of balance - all the requirements for a creature to be able to fly.

There has been an upsurge of interest in chamber music. Likewise opera is receiving a boost from increased record sales. 这样的信号词还包括: and, furthermore, more, than, that, also, likewise, moreover, in addition, what is more, for instance, for example

I’d like to go but I’m too busy. 这类信号词还有: although, however, on the contrary, but, in spite of, otherwise, despite, nevertheless, yet

As a result of the pilots’ strike, all flights have had to be cancelled. All flights have had to be cancelled as a result of the pilots’ strike. 显示因果关系的信号词还有: for, thus, because, for this reason, so, therefore, as, since, consequently

Internet speeds communication between companies, among co-workers through video-conferences, and among other individuals. First, media companies use the Internet for online news, or to broadcast audio and video, including live radio and television programs, while individuals use the Internet for communication, entertainment, finding information, buying and selling goods and services. Second, the notion of distance disappears thanks to the Internet. People also enjoy instant messaging to exchange text messages or pictures in real time, with real-time video and sound. Finally, scientists and scholars use the Internet to perform research, distribute lecture notes or course materials to students, they communicate with colleagues, and can also publish papers and articles. 这样的信号词包括: first, second, third, and so on, then, after, before, next, last, afterward, finally

In conclusion, I would like to say how much I have enjoyed myself today. 表示结论或总结的信号词和短语还有: as a result, finally, therefore, accordingly, in short, thus, consequently, in conclusion, so, in brief, in a word

                                                            My pet : turtle

Last week, my husband bought two turtles as our pets. I felt unhappy at first because they made noise at night, and they just ate meat which made me feel troublesome. But my husband likes them so I try to observe them and find some interesting things on them.

One day, I was watching TV, suddenly ,my husband called me in an excited voice," Come here quickly, the turtle is eating meat!" I never see a turtle eating meat before,so I ran into the kitchen and just saw the turtle opening its mouth and catching the meat on the water then ate it. So cute they are! Later I try to like them and feed them. You will find that sometimes they are so naughty but sometimes they are quiet. In a word, they are good choices as pets.

The two turtles have been in my home for two weeks, we have much fun playing with them, we will keep them as long as possible and let them live happily .

1.baby-kisser

It seems that baby-kissers are praised as much as they are criticized.

2.baby brain

Many women claim they suffer "baby brain" in pregnancy, becoming forgetful.

3.fair-haired boy

Ted is the boss’s fair-haired boy now, but he’ll be just like the rest of us in a month.

4.blue-eyed boy

Paul is the teacher’s blue-eyed boy.

5.hold the baby

The other investors pulled out of the project and we were left holding the baby.

6.cry baby

Come on, Jack, you’re twenty years old - don’t be such a cry baby about everything. We all have our problems, but you ought to do something about them instead of just complaining.

7.mommy’s boy

John needs to grow up. He’s such a mummy’s boy! His mom still makes him lunch and he’s 30 years old.

8.bottle baby

The bottle babies sat there, waiting to be thrown out at closing time.

9.babe in the woods
A babe in the woods就是指一个在某一领域没有经验,什么也不懂的人。你可以说一个人在经商或人际关系方面没有经验是a babe in the woods。Babe in the woods这个习惯用语来自1595年一首很流行的诗歌《The Children in the Wood》(树林里的孩子们),诗里写的是两个孤儿被遗弃在森林里的故事。

Henry is like a babe in the woods at his company: everyone takes advantage of him.

10.child’s play

For me, playing the guitar is child’s play. It’s so easy.

11.jobs for the boys

The party has been accused of creating a "jobs for the boys" system of government.

12.like a kid in a candy store

When I got the job, I was like a kid in a candy store.

13.boys will be boys

My children are always being noisy with their friends. But boys will be boys.

4.throw the baby out with the bath water

There are some good points to the system. Let’s not destroy the method for a few faults, or we shall be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Song:I’m Not Your Hero
Artist:Tegan And Sara

Standing where I am now, standing up at all
I was used to feeling like
I was never gonna see myself at the finish line
Hanging on to parts of me, hanging on at all
I was used to seeing no future in my sight line
Sometimes it feels like they wanna remind me
Send all those villains after me
I’m not their hero
But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t brave
I never walked the party line
Doesn’t mean that I was never afraid
I’m not your hero
But that doesn’t mean we’re not one and the same
Feeling like I am now lighting up the hall
I was used to standing in the shadow of a damaged heart
Learning all I know now, losing all I did
I never used to feel like I’d be standing so far ahead
Sometimes it feels what I recovered you lost
Sending your peaceful loss to me
I’m not their hero
But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t brave
I never walked the party line
Doesn’t mean that I was never afraid
I’m not your hero
But that doesn’t mean we’re not one and the same
Sometimes it feels like the side that I’m on
Plays the toughest hand, holds the longest stand
Sometimes it feels like I’m all that they’ve got
It’s so hard to know I’m not what they want
Sometimes it feels like the side that I’m on
Plays the toughest hand, holds the longest stand
Sometimes it feels like I’m all that they’ve got
It’s hard so to know I’m not what they want
I’m not their hero
But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t brave
I never walked the party line
Doesn’t mean that I was never afraid
I’m not your hero
But that doesn’t mean we’re not one the and same
I do my best to walk the finest line
Till I’ve had all that I can take
