As the modern technology develops swiftly in these years, many criticisms have been broached to argue against its unilateral benefits to our life. In the essay “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price”, the author Matt Richtel traces the messy life of the Campbell and states that in spite of the benefit brought to us, the technology has damaged our normal life, which is concluded as “paying a price” in the title. As a whole, the price is divided into three aspects.
Firstly, Matt contends that technology would rather damage our brains than benefit it. To prove it, he quote words and survey of DR.Nova Volkow, showing that our brains are exposed to the continuously varying environment and forced to shift attention to unnecessary information, for which they become stressful and numb in the end. In a word, our brains pay a price physically and mentally for ever-changing technology.
Secondly, the author states that our multitasking capacity decline so more time is occupied by technology. As the researchers at the University of California conclude, nowadays people spent almost twice time in technology compared with half a year ago. The reason is revealed in the survey that human can only process on stream of information at a time of Mr. Ophir. Therefore, once we multitask we yield half the result with twice the effort and time, not to mention the lasting effect on our mind after multitask. With such disadvantages, people indeed pay a price in time and efficiency.
Last but not least, the author also insists that technology have interpreted our regular tasks. To illustrate it he take Connor, Lily and Mrs. Campbell as examples, the former of which are absolutely obsessed in technology and have trouble finishing their homework, the latter of which fails in baking cookies time and again as she plan. In a word, technology has ruined their goals.

Response Paper:”Attached to Technology and Paying a Price”

Published in the Nytimes website on June 7, 2016, Matt Rachel’s article “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price” mainly discusses the relationship between technology development and its damage on daily life. In his perspective, nowadays people are so attached to technology that they dessert old-fashioned traditions. To approve it, the family of Mr. Campbell is given as examples from time to time. Due to the methodic structure and eloquent instances, I can’t agree more with the author’s topic.

Take my experience as an example. During the Spring Festival, we kids always company our old grandparents. Because there is little time for union, I always feel guilty and concerned for my lack in their old times, so I used to spending every minute with them. However, the mobile phone wrecked this tradition secretly. When I waked from the electronic virtual world, I spotted their heartbroken expressions.

That is the first time I have realized a wide crack between the older and teenagers, which is resulted by technology development. It’s true that technology has sent us to a bright future, but, must the older be left behind us? If so, after enjoying the technology benefits we will pay irrecoverable price when they leave us.

As a result, when I read the passage I fully approved the author. The technology development in portable electronic equipment have severely affected our life and one day we will pay a price.

About my brother

There is a popular saying in the Internet that every girl will become a shrew when she has a naughty younger brother, and every boy will become an angle when he has a younger sister ---- no matter what the sister is like. Though exaggerated, it indeed introduces the interesting relationship between sisters and brothers.

However, such saying doesn’t fit me. My brother is totally different from those naughty guys. In my memory, he is an obedient, clever but a little weak boy. For him, what I feel most is guilt and pity due to my role in his growth.

Since he was in primary school, he has been praised for his smartness and encouraged by my parents. Unluckily, compared with what his own sister had done in his age, his performance still disappointed others and brought him endless comments like "You are good but your sister is always better", which I think, may influence his confidence when he gradually grew up.

As he grows up, he gradually becomes interested in video game and almost drowns himself in TV programs. As a result, he lags behind in the study which concerns my parents a lot. Like what they did in his childhood, parents take me as an example again but my brother has been rebel and restless to the stereotyped preach. So, when I came back home from university, I found him had changed a lot and our relationship became subtle, preventing me from teaching him like in childhood.

Though he is always obedient to the older in face of criticism, and he admitted his slothful attitude, there was a time I witnessed his most drastic revolt when he suddenly stood up from sofa, cried out “Why all of you always shows favoritisms to her but not me” and rushed to his room slamming the door.

We were reconciled before I left for Beijing. He has never complained about me any more except that cry. I can feel that he still respect me, adore me and be proud of having me as his sister like childhood, but many comments hurt the sensitive and weak boy. I hope my brother can deal with all these nonsense and prove that he is who he is, not only a good sister’s brother.

The end of “one-child policy”

For over 35 years, China has firmly adopted a basic policy----the ONE-CHILD POLICY. Though it has contributed a lot, the discussions on whether to end the policy exist all the time. Finally in Oct. 2015, the authorities abolished it and implemented a new policy allowing couples to bear two babies, which leads to a heated debate especially among the group of OLNY CHILD. However, the ONLY CHILD should accept theend of ONE-CHILD POLICY understandingly for the nation, society and themselves.

As our nation is faced with population aging, it’s necessary for the ONLY CHILD to be considerate of abolishing ONE-CHILD POLICY. According to the data of CCTV, in the latest 25 years, the proportion of elders among China population have increased by 9.93%, from 5.57% to 15.5% [1]. Moreover, it implies that if no action is taken, more than 36 million Chinese are expected to be elders in 2040[2]. Undoubtedly China can’t take risk of declining her comprehensive national power at the golden time. So the end is essential to nation and they should understand it.

In addition to nation, the ONLY CHILD should also realize that the society will benefit a lot from the end of the policy, thus to some extent they should accept it with satisfaction. AS Hillary Clinton believed,” We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.”[3] (Hillary Clinton, 1993). The individual is related to the whole society, for instance, if the ONLY CHILDs refuse to bear two babies and the original policy continue, each of them have to support four elders in the future. But owing to the end of policy, it will be much released if the ONLY CHILDs have a sibling to share supporting stress.

Eventually, the ONLY CHILD will benefit from the end of ONE-CHILD POLICY in the long run. Wang Feng, the specially invited social professor of FUDAN University, believed the ONE-CHILD POLICY do much harm to the teenagers nowadays [4]. As he analyzed, the ONLY CHILD lack the company with siblings so their abilities to get along well with others decline. What’s worse, without siblings they’re inclined to monopolize everything, such as money, food and even the attention and love from their elders [5]. Obviously such kids rarely grow into selfless and cooperative adults. As the ONE-CHILD POLICY ends, some of them will receive a brother or sister, so they can learn how to share and live with others.

Though as time goes by, the heat of debate among the ONLY CHILDs gradually fades, it is not the fundamental solution. Only after their accepting the end of policy understandingly can the whole society adjust to the new policy.

As I enter the second week of the second semester, I am more and more frequently considering of my future. A talk between my boyfriends and I accounts for this.

It was in last winter holiday, I had a deepgoing talk about life with my boyfriend at midnight. He suddenly raised a serious question: what on earth do you like and what job do you desire to have in the future? At the mere moment, I was in a daze. I had no reply and realized that I didn’t have a plan of the future. I had not made an exact choice in career and future.

In others’ eyes, I am a girl with success and luck so they attach great expectation to me. They trust my capability in managing, praise me for my diligence and automatically think that I can solve all the problems by myself. Being afraid of letting them down, I dare not to expose my anxiety and concern about future. Actually it always exist, hiding deeply in my heart.

The biggest problem is career. The major I study ------ aero engine, is prepared to deliver graduates to national programs related to country development. Although it is listed in the most important and promising events, the world of it is unbelievably stiff and stubborn. Worse still, the program may take one’s lifelong effort but nothing is achieved even after his last breath. I’m afraid of a lifelong, routine, boring, pool work or burying my brightest day in it. I’m also afraid of the gender-imbalanced working environment. So should I give up my major and compete with other professional students as a freshman in their fields after my graduation? Or should I tolerate this for a lifelong time? Even if I choose this hard works, can I beat the men whose number is ten times more than women and get my ideal position? Can I keep my interest and love after acting like a small nail in the huge “country” machine?

May be after many years, after I have settled down and wholly grown up, when I look back on this passage, it will seem kind of naive or overanxious. But this is a footprint of my growth, proving that I start to think of future seriously from this moment. As a result, it all deserves in the end.
